The ideal letter of recommendation should have the
1. It establishes the RECOMMENDER's credibility in
a) evaluating the applicant's performance/potential
b) and the applicant's suitability for whatever it is
he/she is applying for.
2. It establishes the applicant's ability to successfully
complete the task / degree.
3. It establishes the applicant as the best choice for
that position / task.
Of course, it is not often that a letter of recommendation
has all of these components. Hence, you will have to
prioritize. For example, should you ask the Dosen Besar
with many ijasah / singkatan following his name (PhD DLit
MS MBA MA MPhil BE BS ....) to write you a letter even if he
does not know you very well, or should you ask a lecturer who
has worked closely with you?
This is where it is important to think of how to choose which
persons to ask for letters of recommendation. Even if not all
your letter have all the components above, you should try to
have the combinations of all the letters to have all the
